The main role of Norðurorka is to handle the energy demands of households and businesses in its area by the processing and utilization of geothermal energy, hydropower, water and other resources. This also includes the distribution and sale of energy, water and other yields of the company. Norðurorka partakes in other activities that utilize research, knowledge or equipment, which the company has at its disposal.

Norðurorka Ltd.'s main role is to service homes and businesses with the processing and distribution of hot water and drinking water, distribution of electricity and sewer operations. Norðurorka Ltd. may also participate in activities that can use resources in the operation area, as well as the company research, knowledge or equipment, to promote the community.

Norðurorka was established on August 1st. in the year 2000, with the merger of Akureyri Electricity Utility and Akureyri Heating and Water Utilities.

On December 13th. in the year 2002 Alþingi, Icelandic Parliament, adopted the law on transitions of Nordurorka from a Municipality Company to a Limited Company. The "new" company started operating on January 1st in the year 2003. This decision was linked to changes in legislation regarding the separation between the production and sale of electricity (competitive business) on one hand and distribution of electricity on the other hand (concession activities - public sector). Also it was linked to possible mergers with other Utilities in surrounding areas.

Heating Utility. Processing and utilization of geothermal energy.
Water Utility. Processing and utilization of drinking water/potable water. (Spring water and groundwater.)
Electricity Utility. Distribution of electricity.
Sewer Utility. Operations of the sewer system and sewage treatment plant.
